Gal Oya National Park

Gal Oya National Park

Boat Safaris & Wilderness in the Uva Province

Overview

Gal Oya National Park, located in the Uva and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka near Ampara, is one of the island's most beautiful destinations. Established in 1954, it serves as the main catchment area for the country's largest reservoir, the 'Senanayake Samudra'. This remarkable park is a frequent feature in Sri Lanka's wildlife adventures.

Over 150 species of birds can be seen here, including lesser adjutants, grey-headed fish eagles, white-bellied sea eagles, and red-faced malkohas. Beyond birdwatching, the park nurtures large groups of mammals. Many tourists visit in hopes of seeing the herds of elephants that call this enchanting haven home.

During a tour, you may also encounter toque monkeys, water buffaloes, Sri Lankan axis deer, and Sri Lankan leopards. The gorgeous lesser albatross, an endemic butterfly species, is also commonly spotted in Gal Oya National Park. What makes this park truly unique is the opportunity for boat safaris - a rare experience where you can watch elephants swimming from island to island.
